Halfway Through ACCA? How the 2027 Changes Affect You

Being halfway through ACCA is a strange place to be right now. You are far enough along to have real progress to protect, but not close enough to the finish line to ignore the changes ahead. Every new blog seems to say something different, and you just want to know one thing: what do I need to do?

Here is the calm version. If you are in the middle of your qualification, you are in a good position. Your passes are protected, your plan just needs to be sharper, and a few decisions made in the next few months can save you real time. At Abeel School of Accountancy, we talk to halfway students every week, so this guide answers the questions they ask most.

First, What Does “Halfway” Mean?

For most students, halfway means you are somewhere in Applied Skills. You may have cleared Applied Knowledge and a few skills papers, with several exams still to go. Some halfway students are also between Applied Skills and Strategic Professional.

The good news is the same for all of them. ACCA has confirmed that students move onto the redesigned qualification at transition and receive credit for equivalent elements already completed. Applied Skills becomes Expertise, and your passes map across. You can read ACCA’s wording on its page for current ACCA Qualification students.

What Is Actually Changing for You?

Let us strip it down to the changes that touch a halfway student directly.

Your exam names and codes. TX becomes E1, FR becomes E2, AA becomes E3 Audit, Risk and Control, FM becomes E4 Finance and Investment and PM becomes E5 Performance with Data Analysis.

Law moves down. Corporate and Business Law becomes K3 Business Law at Knowledge level. If you have not passed it, you will need to sit it.

One options exam instead of two. When you reach Strategic Professional, you will need both Essentials and just one option, chosen from five.

New modules replace EPSM. The Ethics and Professional Skills Module disappears, and the Essential Employability Modules take its place.

Key dates. According to ACCA’s official timeline, June 2027 is the final session for current Applied Skills and Strategic Professional session exams, and the first Expertise and Strategic Professional exams in the new structure arrive in September 2027.

Your Halfway Checklist

Here are six things every halfway student should check this month.

1. Have I passed Business Law (LW)? If not, make it a priority. It maps to K3, it can be taken on demand and it forms part of the complete Applied Skills set. ACCA says students who have not completed LW must enter K3 before, or at the same time as, their Expertise exams.

2. Have I passed BT? A completed BT exam earns credit for the Responsible Business Management module. Without it, you complete that module, which ACCA describes as chargeable and expected to take around 60 hours.

3. Can I finish all Applied Skills papers before transition? If you complete every Applied Skills exam, including LW, you will not need the Digital Tech and Innovation module. If you do not, ACCA expects it to take around 100 hours, be chargeable and be purchased before you can enter Strategic Professional exams.

4. Have I done EPSM? Completing it before the mid July 2027 cut-off earns credit for the Ethical, Sustainable Leadership module, which would otherwise take about 70 hours. EPSM takes around 20 hours.

5. Is my exam record accurate? Check passes and exemptions on your ACCA account, then run it through ACCA’s Transition Tool so you see your real position.

6. Do I know my remaining sessions? We are in October 2026, so the windows left are December 2026, March 2027 and June 2027.

What Is Left? A Simple Scenario Guide

Your best plan depends on how much is still ahead of you.

You have one or two Applied Skills papers left. You are in a strong spot. Aim to clear them in the next two sessions, so June 2027 stays as a safety net rather than a deadline. Finishing the whole level also protects you from the Digital Tech and Innovation module.

You have three or four papers left. This is where planning matters most. Match each paper to a session and be honest about your workload. Three well prepared papers beat five rushed ones. If you cannot realistically finish all before June 2027, decide which ones protect you most, such as LW, and accept that the rest will be sat in the new structure.

You have five or six papers left, or you are just past Applied Knowledge. There is no need to panic. Your passes will be recognised, and starting or continuing under the new Expertise level is a perfectly good plan. Focus on steady progress, begin with Law, which ACCA itself suggests as a first Applied Skills exam, and avoid trying to cram the whole level into one year.

You are between Applied Skills and Strategic Professional. Once you finish the skills level, you move on to Strategic Professional. Decide whether to complete EPSM before your first Strategic Professional exam, since ACCA continues to recommend it, and remember the seven year rule for completing the level.

Should You Sit Performance Management Now or Wait for E5?

This is a question halfway students ask often. The current PM paper has years of past papers and familiar examiner patterns. E5 Performance with Data Analysis will be new, with added data analysis and little exam history in its first sessions. If your timing allows and you are comfortable with the current syllabus, clearing PM before June 2027 may feel safer. If you have strong data skills and enjoy analytics, E5 could suit you well. Neither choice is wrong. The right one depends on your readiness and schedule.

The Workload Reality Check

Many working students plan as if they have unlimited study time. They do not. Before you commit to a heavy exam schedule, count your real weekly hours, include work deadlines, family commitments and revision for papers you have already started.

A useful rule is one properly prepared session exam, or two if your schedule truly allows, rather than three under prepared attempts. ACCA itself encourages steady progress rather than rushing, since continuing your progression ahead of the changes supports your development and your path to membership. Steady and consistent beats fast and stressed.

What About Your PER and Time Limits?

Two other things continue as before. The Practical Experience Requirement stays the same, with 36 months of supervised experience and performance objectives, so keep recording it. The seven year rule for completing Strategic Professional also stays unchanged. Check the date of your first Strategic Professional pass when you get there.

Common Halfway Mistakes

  • Waiting to see what happens. Delay costs you session windows.
  • Saving the final paper for June 2027. If you do not pass, the current exam is gone.
  • Ignoring EPSM and Law. These small items carry large time savings.
  • Overloading one session. Too many papers can lower every result.
  • Using outdated study kits. Make sure materials match your exam session.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. I am halfway through ACCA. Will I lose my progress in 2027?

No. ACCA has confirmed that students receive credit for equivalent elements already completed when they move to the redesigned qualification.

Q2. Should I rush to finish Applied Skills before June 2027?

Only if you can do it without lowering your chances. A few well prepared attempts are better than many rushed ones. The advisers at Abeel School of Accountancy can look at your record and suggest a realistic plan.

Q3. What happens if I do not finish Applied Skills before transition?

You move to the Expertise level with credit for the papers you have passed, and you would need the Digital Tech and Innovation module, which ACCA describes as chargeable and expected to take around 100 hours.

Q4. Is Business Law still required?

Yes. It becomes K3 Business Law. If you have passed LW, you receive credit. If you have not, you must sit it, either before transition or as K3 before or alongside your Expertise exams.

Q5. Should I complete EPSM now?

For most students heading toward Strategic Professional, yes. Completing it before the mid July 2027 cut-off earns credit for the Ethical, Sustainable Leadership module, which takes far longer to complete.

Q6. Will I need to take two options exams at Strategic Professional?

No. The new structure requires both Essentials and one options exam from five.

Q7. What makes your institute different from other ACCA institutes?

We are the only institute offering weekly live revision sessions combined with smart course completion. Students revise every week and finish the syllabus early, so the final weeks before the exam are for practice, not panic.
