ACCA Exams Reduced from 13 to 11

ACCA Exams Reduced from 13 to 11: What Is Removed?

“ACCA is cutting two exams? Great, so it must be getting easier.” If that was your first thought, you are not alone. It was ours too. But when we looked closely at ACCA’s redesigned qualification, the story turned out to be more interesting than a simple reduction.

So what is actually being removed? What is only moving? And does a lower exam count really mean a lighter workload? We put together this guide at Abeel School of Accountancy to answer those questions in plain language, with no jargon and no confusion.

The Quick Answer: Where Did the Two Exams Go?

Under the current structure, ACCA students sit 13 exams: 3 at Applied Knowledge, 6 at Applied Skills and 4 at Strategic Professional (two compulsory papers plus two options). From 2027, you sit 11 exams across Knowledge, Expertise and Strategic Professional.

Two things explain the drop of two exams:

  1. Business and Technology (BT) is removed as a standalone exam.
  2. Strategic Professional asks for one options exam instead of two.

That is it. Two exams out, and the arithmetic works. Everything else is a rename, a move or an upgrade.

Exam Removed #1: Business and Technology (BT)

BT has been the gentle entry paper for years, covering business organisation, governance, technology and the wider workplace. In the new structure it no longer exists as its own exam.

Does that mean those topics vanish? Not at all. Business awareness, ethics and responsible practice now appear through the Essential Employability Modules, which are online assessed modules rather than timed exams. At Knowledge level, you complete Responsible Business Management, which covers ethics, governance and sustainability. So the learning stays, but the exam hurdle goes.

Exam Removed #2: The Second Options Paper

Today, Strategic Professional students choose two options from four: AFM, APM, ATX and AAA. From 2027, you choose just one. The pool grows to five, with the new Data Science Professional joining Audit and Assurance, Corporate Finance, Performance and Insights, and Taxation Advisory.

So you lose a paper, but gain a bigger menu. This lets you go deeper into one specialism instead of splitting energy across two.

What Is Not Removed (But Looks Different)

This is where many websites get confused, so let us be clear. Several papers are changing places or names, but they are not being deleted.

Treat the table as a planning guide. ACCA’s official transition tools give the exact mapping for your own exam record, so always confirm there.

Notice what happens with the level counts. Knowledge stays at three papers because BT leaves and Business Law arrives. Expertise drops from six to five because LW moved down. Strategic Professional drops from four to three because of the single options paper. Add them up and you get 11.

Does Fewer Exams Mean an Easier Qualification?

Honestly, no. Here is why.

Exams are broader. With fewer papers, each one carries more responsibility. Expect more integrated questions that blend topics together.

Data and sustainability are now examinable. E5, S1 and the Data Science option all push you to work with data and ESG ideas that were less central before.

Employability modules add effort. They are not timed exams, but they still need your time and attention to complete.

Computer-based exams demand a new skill. Foundations and Knowledge exams will be on-demand and computer-based, so screen practice matters.

Think of it as a leaner qualification with a sharper edge. Fewer papers, but more modern ones.

Key Dates You Should Know

  • June 2027: final session for current Applied Skills and Strategic Professional exams
  • July 2027: first Foundations and Knowledge exams under the new structure, on demand

Based on ACCA’s official future qualification timeline, these are the milestones to remember:

What If You Are Already Midway Through ACCA?

You will not lose progress. ACCA has confirmed that exams already passed continue to count, and your results carry across to the new structure through a mapping process. If you have already cleared BT, that pass is recognised, so you will not be punished for finishing early.

The practical advice is simple. If you can complete papers before the June 2027 cut-off, doing so can keep your path smooth. If you are unsure where you stand, the counsellors at Abeel School of Accountancy can map your exam record against the new structure for free. Start with our ACCA counselling page.

How Abeel School of Accountancy Helps You Through the Change

A restructure is stressful when you study alone. Deadlines move, codes change and every blog says something slightly different. Our team follows each ACCA update so you do not have to.

Abeel School of Accountancy is the only institute that conducts weekly live revision sessions along with smart course completion, something no one else offers. Each week, students revise what they have learned with a teacher live, which keeps concepts fresh and clears doubts immediately. Smart course completion makes sure the syllabus is finished early, leaving proper time for practice before exam day.

When papers become broader and more data driven, steady weekly revision is the best defence against forgetting. See how the system works on our ACCA programme page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. Why is ACCA reducing exams from 13 to 11?

ACCA removed Business and Technology as a standalone exam and now asks for one options paper at Strategic Professional instead of two. Business Law moves down a level rather than disappearing, so the total settles at 11.

Q2. Which exam is completely removed?

Business and Technology (BT) is the one paper that no longer exists as a standalone exam. Its themes are covered through the new structure and the Essential Employability Modules.

Q3. Is Corporate and Business Law removed too?

No. It moves to Knowledge level and becomes K3 Business Law, so you will sit it earlier in your journey.

Q4. Will the qualification become easier with 11 exams?

Not really. The papers are broader, with more focus on data, sustainability and applied thinking. The faculty at Abeel School of Accountancy prepares students for this deeper style through consistent weekly revision.

Q5. I have already passed BT. What happens to it?

ACCA has confirmed that exams passed under the current structure still count, so your progress is protected. Check ACCA’s transition resources to see exactly how your results map across.

Q6. How many options exams will I take at Strategic Professional?

Just one. You pick from Audit and Assurance, Corporate Finance, Data Science, Performance and Insights, or Taxation Advisory, alongside the two compulsory papers.

Q7. Does Abeel offer anything other institutes do not?

Yes. We are the only institute offering weekly live revision sessions combined with smart course completion. Students revise every week and finish the syllabus early, so exam preparation never becomes a last minute rush.

Final Thoughts

The move from 13 to 11 exams sounds dramatic, but the logic is simple. One exam is retired, one options choice is trimmed, and a few papers shift or evolve to match a world of data, sustainability and digital work. Your previous effort is protected, and the future path is clearer than it first seems.
