How to Finish ACCA Before the New Syllabus Starts

How to Finish ACCA Before the New Syllabus Starts

Every ACCA student has the same thought right now: “Can I finish before everything changes?” For some, the answer is yes, and finishing under the current syllabus brings real advantages. For others, rushing would be a mistake. The trick is knowing which group you belong to and then planning backwards from the deadline.

This guide comes from the team at Abeel School of Accountancy, and it is written to be practical. By the end, you will know exactly what “finishing” means at each level, how many sessions you have left and how to build a plan that does not burn you out.

First, Is Finishing Early Even Necessary?

Let us start with the honest answer: no, it is not necessary. ACCA has confirmed that students move onto the redesigned qualification and receive credit for equivalent elements already completed. Nobody is forced out, and nobody restarts. You can read the details on ACCA’s page for current ACCA Qualification students.

So why do people want to finish early? Because it can bring real benefits:

  • You study a syllabus you already know, with plenty of past papers and familiar examiner patterns.
  • You can avoid some of the new modules, which cost extra time and money.
  • You reach affiliate status or membership sooner, which helps your career.

If those benefits matter to you, and the timeline is realistic, finishing early is a smart goal. If not, there is no shame in moving smoothly into the new structure.

The Calendar You Are Working With

According to ACCA’s official timeline, the key dates are:

  1. June 2027: the final session for current Applied Skills and Strategic Professional session exams.
  2. July 2027: first Foundations and Knowledge exams under the new structure, and a slightly later completion date for the on demand Law variants.
  3. Mid July 2027: the deadline ACCA has given for completing EPSM and Foundations in Professionalism, with exact dates still to be confirmed.
  4. September 2027: first Expertise and Strategic Professional exams in the new structure.

Today is October 2026. That leaves three session windows: December 2026, March 2027 and June 2027. Check ACCA’s exam entry dates early, because booking deadlines arrive before the sessions themselves.

What Does “Finishing” Mean at Your Level?

Finishing is different depending on where you are, so let us define it clearly.

At Applied Knowledge. Finishing means completing FA, MA and BT, plus the Foundations in Professionalism module if you want the current Diploma awarded before transition. ACCA lists mid July 2027 for that.

At Applied Skills. Finishing means completing all six exams in or before the June 2027 session, with the on demand Law variants allowed slightly later, plus EPSM by mid July 2027. Completing every Applied Skills exam, including LW, also means you do not need the Digital Tech and Innovation module, which ACCA expects to take about 100 hours.

At Strategic Professional. Finishing under the current rules means both Essentials (SBR and SBL) and two options exams. Under the new rules, the Strategic Professional Certificate needs both Essentials and one option. ACCA also notes that if you receive credit for both Essentials, one option and the Ethical, Sustainable Leadership module at transition, you will be awarded the Certificate. So in some cases, you may not need to finish a second option at all.

The Backward Planning Method

Here is a simple method that works better than guessing.

Step 1: List what is left. Write down every exam and module still needed, including Law and EPSM.

Step 2: Count your real study capacity. Be honest about your working hours, family commitments and energy. Most working students can prepare one paper per session properly, and some can manage two. Very few can do three well.

Step 3: Place your exams in sessions, working backwards from June 2027. Do not use June as your plan. Use it as your backup. Aim to place your last paper in March 2027 or earlier, so that a retake is still possible under the current syllabus.

Step 4: Put on demand papers in the gaps. Law is on demand, which makes it easier to fit between session exams.

Step 5: Check the plan against ACCA’s tools. Use ACCA’s Transition Tool to confirm what credit and modules you still need.

Step 6: Review after every result. Plans change after each exam, so adjust them.

Three Example Plans

These are illustrations, not promises, but they show how the method works.

Plan A: two papers left. Sit one paper in December 2026 and the other in March 2027. Keep June 2027 free for a retake if needed. You finish with margin to spare.

Plan B: four papers left. Place Law on demand early, then one session paper in December, one in March and one in June, leaving no safety net. This is a tight plan. Think carefully about whether the fourth paper is better sat in the new structure, rather than rushed.

Plan C: six papers left. Finishing everything before June 2027 would need an extreme schedule. A better plan is to clear Law early, then complete the one or two papers you feel strongest in, and move calmly into the new Expertise level for the rest. Your passes will be recognised either way.

When You Should Not Rush

Rushing is a real risk. Here are signs that you should slow down:

  • You are working long hours and cannot give each paper serious study time.
  • You have not started revising for the paper you plan to sit in two months.
  • You are choosing exams only because they are “easy”, not because you are ready.
  • You are planning to sit your last paper in June 2027 with no backup.

If any of these sound like you, a calmer plan will protect your pass rate. Remember, if you sit a paper in the final June 2027 session and do not pass, the current version of that exam will no longer be available afterwards. Your next attempt would be at the equivalent exam in the new structure, so confirm retake rules with ACCA.

Smart Habits That Help You Finish

Study in blocks, not marathons. Regular shorter sessions beat weekend cramming.

Practise past papers early. The current syllabus has a large bank of them, which is a real advantage of finishing early.

Use the right study materials. Some resources are dated to the current exam year, so check that yours match your session.

Protect your rest. Burnout ruins more exam attempts than lack of knowledge.

Do not forget small items. Law, EPSM and the Foundations in Professionalism module can quietly derail an otherwise perfect plan.

Planning is half the battle, and execution is the other half. The advisers at Abeel School of Accountancy review your passed papers, build a realistic session plan and tell you honestly whether rushing makes sense for you. Start on our ACCA counselling page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. Do I have to finish ACCA before the new syllabus starts?

No. ACCA has confirmed that students move across to the redesigned qualification with credit for equivalent elements already completed. Finishing early is optional, though it can bring benefits such as familiar papers and fewer extra modules.

Q2. What is the last session for current Applied Skills and Strategic Professional exams?

June 2027. The on demand Law variants have a slightly later completion date of July 2027, but always confirm exact dates on ACCA’s exam pages.

Q3. How many papers can I realistically sit before June 2027?

It depends on your schedule, but most working students prepare one paper per session properly and some manage two. The advisers at Abeel School of Accountancy can help you judge what is realistic for you.

Q4. What happens if I fail a paper in June 2027?

The current version of that exam will no longer be available afterwards, so your next attempt would be at the equivalent exam in the new structure. Check ACCA’s retake rules before planning.

Q5. Should I sit my last paper in June 2027?

Try not to. Aim to finish by March 2027 so June remains a backup session.

Q6. Which small items should I not forget?

Business Law, EPSM and, at Applied Knowledge, the Foundations in Professionalism module. These can save you many hours of extra work if completed before transition.

Q7. What makes your institute different from other ACCA institutes?

We are the only institute offering weekly live revision sessions combined with smart course completion. Students revise every week and finish the syllabus early, so the final weeks before the exam are for practice, not panic.

Final Thoughts

Finishing ACCA before the new syllabus starts is a worthy goal, but only when it is realistic. Count your papers, count your sessions, plan backwards and keep June 2027 as your safety net rather than your plan. If the maths does not work, move calmly into the new structure knowing your passes are protected.
