How to Become an ACCA Member in Zimbabwe

How to Become an ACCA Member in Zimbabwe: A Complete Step-by-Step Guide (2027 Update)

If you have ever sat in a Harare or Bulawayo office, watched a qualified accountant sign off a set of financial statements, and thought, “I want to be that person,” this guide is for you. The ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) qualification is one of the most respected accounting credentials in the world, and thousands of Zimbabweans are already using it to build careers at home and abroad.

But the road to becoming an ACCA member in Zimbabwe can look confusing from the outside. Exams, affiliate status, practical experience, an ethics module, and now a brand-new syllabus arriving in 2027. Where do you even start?

At Abeel School of Accountancy, we answer this question almost every week. So we have put the whole journey into one plain-English, step-by-step guide.

What Does It Mean to Be an ACCA Member?

Being an ACCA member means you have passed the required exams, completed the Ethics and Professional Skills Module (EPSM), and finished 36 months of supervised practical work experience. Only then can you use the letters “ACCA” after your name and call yourself a Chartered Certified Accountant.

When you finish the exams and the ethics module but have not yet completed the work experience, you hold ACCA Affiliate status. Think of it as the halfway house between student and member. Many people stay there longer than they should, so plan your experience early.

Step 1: Check That You Meet the Entry Requirements

The most common starting point for school leavers in Zimbabwe is five O-Level passes, including Mathematics and English. With these you can begin at the first level of the qualification. If you also hold A-Levels, a relevant diploma, or a degree, you may qualify to skip some papers through exemptions.

Not sure where you fit? Our admissions team at Abeel School of Accountancy will review your certificates and map out your starting point for free. For the official rules, always confirm on the ACCA Global website.

Step 2: Register as an ACCA Student

You register online through ACCA’s portal. You will upload your academic documents and identification, then pay a one-off registration fee and an annual subscription. Fees are quoted in pounds sterling and change from time to time, so check the current figures before you budget.

Once registered, you get a myACCA account. This becomes your home base for booking exams, tracking results, and recording your work experience later on.

Step 3: Understand the Structure (Now and From 2027)

Under the current syllabus, ACCA has 13 exams across three levels: Applied Knowledge, Applied Skills, and Strategic Professional. The Strategic Professional level includes two optional papers.

From 2027, the qualification is being redesigned. Based on what ACCA and several tuition providers have published, here is what you should know:

  • New level names. The qualification is organised into Foundations, Knowledge, Expertise, and Strategic Professional.
  • Fewer exams. The total is reported to drop from 13 to 11, with one fewer exam at the Expertise stage and only one optional paper to choose instead of two.
  • Employability modules. New modules covering areas such as AI awareness, sustainability, ethics, and leadership are built into the journey.
  • More digital and data skills woven through the papers.

The key dates to put in your diary:

  • June 2027: the last sitting under the current syllabus.
  • July 2027: first exams under the new Knowledge level.
  • September 2027: first exams under the new Expertise and Strategic Professional levels.

The good news? ACCA has said that passed exams will not be wasted. Your results are mapped across to the new structure, and ACCA offers a Transition Tool to show you exactly where you stand. Entry requirements and exemption policies are also reported to stay the same.

We explain this in more detail in our guide on what happens to your passed exams in 2027 and our breakdown of when the new ACCA syllabus starts.

Step 4: Choose the Right Place to Study

Your tuition provider will shape how smoothly the next few years go. When comparing options in Zimbabwe, look for:

  • ACCA-approved or well-established tutors with strong pass rates
  • Flexible classes, because many students work or study full-time
  • Up-to-date materials that already cover the 2027 changes
  • Mock exams and honest feedback, not just lectures

Abeel School of Accountancy offers structured classes, revision support, and one-to-one guidance so that you are never studying alone. You can see how we teach on our ACCA courses page.

Step 5: Pass Your Exams, One Sitting at a Time

ACCA exams are held several times a year, and you can sit more than one paper per session, though most working students wisely take one or two. A few habits that make a real difference:

  1. Build a weekly timetable and protect it like a work meeting.
  2. Practise past questions early. Reading notes alone will not get you through.
  3. Do not skip the easy-looking papers. They are often where students lose marks through carelessness.
  4. Keep a running list of mistakes and review it before each exam.

If you are juggling a job, our ACCA study plan for the 2027 transition shows how to pace yourself.

Step 6: Complete the Ethics and Professional Skills Module

The EPSM is an online module on professional ethics, commercial awareness, and leadership. It usually takes a few weeks of part-time effort, and you can start it while you are still sitting exams. Many students leave it until the end and then feel the pressure, so do not do that.

Step 7: Gain 36 Months of Practical Experience

This is the step people underestimate. ACCA requires three years of relevant, supervised work, recorded in your online experience record against a set of performance objectives. You will need a practical experience supervisor to sign off your progress. This can be a qualified accountant or a line manager, depending on the situation.

A few tips from our students’ experience:

  • Log your achievements every quarter. Reconstructing three years from memory is painful.
  • Choose roles that stretch you. Audit trainee, accounts assistant, tax officer, and finance graduate positions all work well.
  • Talk to your supervisor early about which objectives your job can realistically cover.

Your experience can often run alongside your exams, which is why the whole journey usually takes three to five years for working students.

Step 8: Apply for Full Membership

Once your exams are passed, the ethics module is done, and your experience is approved, you apply for membership through myACCA. You will confirm your details, accept the professional conduct declaration, and pay the membership fee. After that, you can proudly use “ACCA” after your name.

From there, you can also explore local professional links, such as the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Zimbabwe (ICAZ), to build your network at home.

How Long Does It Take, and What Does It Cost?

A realistic timeline for most Zimbabwean students is three to five years, depending on how many papers you attempt per sitting and whether you hold exemptions. Costs include registration, annual subscription, exam entry fees, study materials, and tuition. Because fees are set in pounds, exchange rate movements matter, so budget with a margin.

Why ACCA Is Worth It for Zimbabweans

The qualification is recognised globally, so it opens doors in Zimbabwe’s banks, audit firms, mining groups, NGOs, and government bodies, and it travels well to South Africa, the UK, the Gulf, and beyond. Employers value the mix of technical knowledge, ethics, and real work experience. You can read more about this in our post on ACCA career prospects and what employers want.

At Abeel School of Accountancy, we have seen first-hand how a student who starts with five O-Levels and a lot of determination can become a finance manager, auditor, or CFO. It takes patience, but it works.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I become an ACCA member in Zimbabwe without a degree?

Yes. A degree is not required. Five O-Level passes including Mathematics and English are the usual starting point, and you can progress through the levels from there.

How long does it take to become an ACCA member in Zimbabwe?

Most students need around three to five years, because exams, the ethics module, and 36 months of work experience can run side by side.

Do I have to restart if I am midway through when the 2027 syllabus begins?

No. ACCA has said completed exams will be mapped to the new structure, and its Transition Tool will show where you stand. Keep studying as planned.

Can I use “ACCA” after my name once I pass all exams?

Not yet. You become an ACCA Affiliate at that stage. You need the practical experience requirement and ethics module complete before using the member designation.

Where can I sit ACCA exams in Zimbabwe?

Exams are held at approved centres, with Harare and Bulawayo being the main locations. Check the ACCA website for the current list and exam dates.

Can I study ACCA while working full-time?

Absolutely. Many Zimbabwean students do exactly that, using evening classes, weekend sessions, or online learning. A realistic timetable matters more than a heavy one.

Is the new 2027 syllabus easier or harder?

It is different rather than easier. There are fewer exams, but more emphasis on digital skills, data, sustainability, and employability, so preparation needs to reflect that.

Can Abeel School of Accountancy help me plan my route?

Yes. Our advisers will check your qualifications, work out any exemptions, and build a study plan that suits your budget and schedule.
