What Happens to Applied Skills Papers in 2027

What Happens to Applied Skills Papers in 2027?

If you are somewhere in the middle of your ACCA journey, you have probably asked yourself this question more than once: what happens to my Applied Skills papers when the new qualification arrives? Do they disappear? Do I have to resit anything? Should I panic and rush?

The short answer is reassuring. Your hard work is protected, and the Applied Skills level evolves into the new Expertise level. But the details matter, and a few smart moves before the deadline can save you time and effort. At Abeel School of Accountancy, we have been helping students make exactly these decisions, so here is the full picture in plain language.

The Big Change in One Sentence

Applied Skills is being replaced by the Expertise level. Students at the Applied Skills level when the transition happens move onto Expertise and receive credit for equivalent elements they have already completed. You can read ACCA’s own wording on its transition page for current students.

Paper by Paper: Where Does Each Applied Skills Exam Go?

There are six Applied Skills papers today. Here is what happens to each one.

Current paperWhere it goes in 2027What to know
Taxation (TX)E1 TaxationCredit carries across
Financial Reporting (FR)E2 Financial ReportingCredit carries across
Audit and Assurance (AA)E3 Audit, Risk and ControlCredit carries across, new paper has more risk focus
Financial Management (FM)E4 Finance and InvestmentCredit carries across, wider investment scope
Performance Management (PM)E5 Performance with Data AnalysisCredit carries across, new paper adds data analysis
Corporate and Business Law (LW)K3 Business LawMoves down a level to Knowledge

So five papers map to the five Expertise exams, and the sixth, Law, moves down to the Knowledge level. That is why the middle level shrinks from six papers to five. If you want to see the full qualification map, ACCA’s qualification levels infographic shows every level on one page.

Treat the table as a planning guide, and confirm your own record through ACCA’s official transition tool.

Key Dates for Applied Skills Students

According to ACCA’s official timeline and published transition guidance:

  • Until June 2027: current Applied Skills exams continue on the existing syllabus
  • June 2027: the final session for current Applied Skills and Strategic Professional session exams
  • September 2027: the first Expertise and Strategic Professional exams under the new structure

Corporate and Business Law has on-demand variants, and some providers report these continue slightly beyond the June session. Check ACCA’s exam entry pages for the exact final date before relying on it.

The Hidden Bonus: Digital Tech and Innovation Module Credit

Here is a detail many websites skip. The new qualification includes Essential Employability Modules, and the Digital Tech and Innovation module sits at the Expertise stage. ACCA’s transition guidance states that students who complete all Applied Skills exams, including LW, before transition will not be required to take that module.

That is a real saving of time and effort. It also means Corporate and Business Law deserves special attention. Even though it moves to Knowledge level as K3, finishing it under the current system forms part of the full Applied Skills set that earns this module credit.

Why LW Is Strangely Important Right Now

Law is the paper students most often postpone, because it feels less connected to the rest of Applied Skills. In 2027 that habit can cost you. Since LW maps to K3 and also contributes to the complete Applied Skills set, many students are better off clearing it early. It is also usually available on demand, which makes it easier to fit between your session based exams.

What About Students Who Finish Applied Skills in Full?

If you complete the whole Applied Skills level before transition, you move straight onto the Strategic Professional level of the new qualification. That is the cleanest outcome, and it is why a lot of students are asking whether to rush. Which brings us to the next question.

Should You Rush to Finish Before June 2027?

As of today, October 2026, there are three session windows left before the final one: December 2026, March 2027 and June 2027. A sensible rule is to avoid leaving your last paper to the final session. If anything goes wrong, you have no second chance under the current syllabus.

Here is how to think about it based on where you are:

Only one or two Applied Skills papers left. You are in a strong position. Finish them in the next sessions while the current syllabus, past papers and study materials are all familiar.

Midway through Applied Skills. Map your remaining papers against the sessions you have left. Be realistic about how many papers you can truly prepare well. One well-prepared paper beats two rushed attempts.

Just starting Applied Skills. You do not need to rush. Your passes will be recognised, and starting the new Expertise level in September 2027 is a perfectly good plan.

Performance Management still outstanding. Think carefully. The current PM paper has years of past papers and well-known examiner patterns, while E5 will be brand new with less exam history on day one. If your timing allows, clearing PM under the current syllabus may feel safer, though students with strong data skills may enjoy E5.

Whatever you decide, avoid rushing so hard that you lower your pass chances. A quick pass rate matters less than a confident pass.

What Is Different About the Expertise Level?

If you will be sitting the new papers, expect a modern flavour. Audit now includes risk and control, finance includes investment topics, performance includes data analysis and the whole level carries more digital thinking. The ideas you already know from Applied Skills form the base, so you are not starting from scratch.
