Will You Need to Resit Exams in the New ACCA Syllabus

Will You Need to Resit Exams in the New ACCA Syllabus?

Few questions worry ACCA students more than this one. You have spent months, maybe years, passing exams. Now you hear that the whole qualification is being redesigned, and a nagging thought appears: will I have to do all of this again?

Take a deep breath. For the vast majority of students, the answer is a clear and comforting no. But there are a few situations where you could end up sitting something you did not expect, and knowing them in advance can save you time, money and stress. We wrote this guide at Abeel School of Accountancy to separate the real risks from the rumours.

The Short Answer

If you have already passed an exam, you do not resit it. ACCA has confirmed that students move across to the redesigned qualification at transition and receive credit for equivalent elements they have already completed. The levels map like this: Applied Knowledge becomes Knowledge, Applied Skills becomes Expertise, and Strategic Professional continues as Strategic Professional.

You can read ACCA’s own wording on its page for current ACCA Qualification students. The key idea is simple: passed means credited.

How Your Passed Papers Are Credited

Here is the credit map, based on ACCA’s published transition tables.

Passed under current structureCredit in the new structure
FA Financial AccountingK1 Financial Accounting
MA Management AccountingK2 Management Accounting
LW Corporate and Business LawK3 Business Law
TX TaxationE1 Taxation
FR Financial ReportingE2 Financial Reporting
AA Audit and AssuranceE3 Audit, Risk and Control
FM Financial ManagementE4 Finance and Investment
PM Performance ManagementE5 Performance with Data Analysis
SBR Strategic Business ReportingS1 Business and Sustainability Reporting
SBL Strategic Business LeaderS2 Strategic Business Leader
AAA, AFM, ATX, APMSAA, SCF, STA, SPI

So even though the names and codes change, the pass you earned follows you. You can also view the full structure in ACCA’s qualification levels infographic.

Where Students Get Caught Out

Not needing a resit is different from needing nothing at all. There are a few situations where something extra appears. None of them is a resit, but they feel like one if you are not prepared.

1. Business Law (LW) for Applied Knowledge students. Corporate and Business Law currently sits at Applied Skills, but in the new structure it moves down to Knowledge level as K3. ACCA says students who complete Applied Knowledge before transition without having passed LW will still need to take the Law exam, and must enter K3 before or at the same time as their Expertise exams. It is not a resit, because you have not sat it yet. It is simply an exam that arrives earlier than you expected.

2. Business and Technology (BT) has no exam equivalent. If you passed BT, you receive credit for the Responsible Business Management module. If you have not passed it, you complete that module in the new structure. ACCA describes it as chargeable (price to be confirmed in January 2027) and expected to take around 60 hours. Again, not a resit, but extra effort you can avoid.

3. The Digital Tech and Innovation module. Students who complete all Applied Skills exams, including LW, before transition do not need to take this module. Those who do not finish them all must complete it. ACCA expects about 100 hours and a fee, and it must be purchased before entering Strategic Professional exams.

4. The Ethical, Sustainable Leadership module. Students who complete the Ethics and Professional Skills Module (EPSM) before transition receive credit for this new module. Those who do not need to complete it, which ACCA expects to take about 70 hours, compared with roughly 20 hours for EPSM.

What If You Fail a Paper Close to the Deadline?

This is the genuine resit scenario, and it deserves honest attention. June 2027 is the final session for current Applied Skills and Strategic Professional session exams. If you sit a paper in that last session and do not pass, the current version of that exam will no longer be available afterwards. Your next attempt would be at the equivalent paper in the new structure, which starts in September 2027.

That is not a disaster, since the new paper builds on the same foundation. But it does mean preparing for a slightly updated syllabus, with more data, risk or sustainability content in some papers, and with fewer past papers to practise on. Please confirm exactly how retakes are handled with ACCA, because rules around attempts and exam dates can be updated.

This is why most advisers suggest not leaving your last paper to June 2027. Aim to finish earlier, so a resit under the familiar syllabus is still possible.

Will Strategic Professional Students Resit Anything?

No. Strategic Professional students move onto the redesigned level with credit for equivalent elements. In fact, the new level asks for less: both Essentials (S1 and S2) plus just one options exam, instead of two. If you have already passed two options, you do not need to take a third. The seven year rule for completing Strategic Professional is unchanged, so keep an eye on the date of your first pass.

What About the Seven Year Rule and Time Limits?

ACCA has stated that the seven year rule for Strategic Professional continues in the redesign. If your first Strategic Professional pass is a few years old, plan your remaining papers accordingly. A good transition plan respects both the June 2027 milestone and your personal time limits.

What About Exemptions?

Many students enter ACCA through university degrees or other qualifications with exemptions. ACCA has said it has published updated exemption guidance alongside the transition, and Foundations in Accountancy students receive credit for equivalent elements at transition. Because every exemption case is slightly different, check your own record rather than relying on general advice.

A Quick Self-Check: Do You Face a Resit Risk?

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Have I passed Law (LW), or am I still planning to sit it?
  • Have I passed BT, or will I need the Responsible Business Management module?
  • Have I completed all six Applied Skills papers, or will I need the Digital Tech and Innovation module?
  • Have I completed EPSM, or will I need the Ethical, Sustainable Leadership module?
  • Am I planning to sit my final current paper in June 2027, with no backup session?

If you answered “yes” or “not sure” to any of these, it is worth reviewing your plan now. You can also check the official ACCA timeline for the latest dates.

How Abeel School of Accountancy Helps You Avoid Surprises

Most students do not fail because they are unprepared in knowledge. They struggle because of timing, missed deadlines or revising too late. Our advisers at Abeel School of Accountancy can review your exam record, flag every module and paper that could affect you and help you build a realistic plan. Start on our ACCA counselling page.

Abeel School of Accountancy is also the only institute that conducts weekly live revision sessions along with smart course completion, something no one else offers. Each week, students revise with a teacher live, so what you learn today is still in your memory on exam day. Smart course completion makes sure the syllabus is finished early, which leaves real time for past papers and exam technique. That combination is the best protection against needing a resit in the first place. See how it works on our ACCA programme page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. Do I need to resit exams I have already passed?

No. ACCA has confirmed that students receive credit for equivalent elements already completed when they move to the redesigned qualification.

Q2. Will I have to sit Business Law again?

Not if you have already passed LW. A pass in Corporate and Business Law gives you credit for K3 Business Law. If you have not passed it yet, you will need to sit it, either as LW before transition or as K3 afterwards.

Q3. What if I fail a paper in the June 2027 session?

The current version of that exam will no longer be available after June 2027, so your next attempt would be at the equivalent exam in the new structure. Check ACCA’s rules for retakes and exam dates before planning.

Q4. Do I need to resit if I have not passed BT?

BT has no exam equivalent. Instead, you complete the Responsible Business Management module, which ACCA describes as chargeable and expected to take around 60 hours. Passing BT before transition earns you credit for it.

Q5. How can I reduce my chances of needing extra work or a retake?

Finish Law early, complete all Applied Skills papers and EPSM before transition if you can and avoid leaving your last paper to the final session. The advisers at Abeel School of Accountancy can build a personal plan around your record.

Q6. Will Strategic Professional students need a third option?

No. The new structure requires only one options exam alongside both Essentials, so students who have already passed two options do not need more.

Q7. What makes your institute different from other ACCA institutes?

We are the only institute offering weekly live revision sessions combined with smart course completion. Students revise every week and finish the syllabus early, so the final weeks before the exam are for practice, not panic.

Final Thoughts

So, will you need to resit exams in the new ACCA syllabus? If you have passed them, no. What you may face are a few extra modules or an earlier Law exam, all of which can be planned for. The students who feel the most pressure are the ones who leave everything until the final session.

Start early, check your exam record and revise steadily, and the new syllabus becomes a smooth step forward instead of a step back.
